In 1943, at the height of both World War II and the Holocaust, a group of forced labourers from the Lemberg concentration camp are sent to a converted army hospital to clear medical waste. Simon Wiesenthal is summoned from this work detail by a nurse to the bedside of a dying Nazi soldier, Karl. The soldier tells him he is seeking "a Jew's" forgiveness for a crime  committed one year prior.  Over a number of hours, he tells Wiesenthal his life story, including joining Hitler Youth and his experiences in the SS. He then confesses to having participated in the destruction, by fire and armaments, of a house full of 300 Jews. He states that as the Jews tried to leap out of windows to escape the burning building, he and the other soldiers gunned them down.

After he finishes his story, he asks Wiesenthal to forgive him. Wiesenthal then leaves the room without saying anything.

Un soldato SS in punto di morte racconta a Wiesenthal di aver eseguito un ordine orrendo e di aver contribuito al massacro di 150/200 ebrei. Tormentato dal rimorso e non volendo morire con la coscienza sporca chiede a Wiesenthal, in quanto ebreo, di essere perdonato. Wiesenthal va via in silenzio..... e rivolge una domanda, spunto di riflessione per le nuove generazioni:

Cosa avreste fatto al mio posto? Voi avreste perdonato?

Può il singolo perdonare in nome dei 6 milioni di vittime? 

Cristo in croce disse ' Padre perdonali perché non sanno quello che fanno '. 

I Nazisti, però, sapevano benissimo quello che facevano, quindi può esserci perdono senza pentimento? 

Si può perdonare senza dimenticare? 

Dimenticare non sarebbe un atto di offesa verso le vittime e un'attenuante verso i carnefici? 

Esistono domande senza risposta? 

Possiamo noi proferire parola quando Dio stesso ha taciuto? 

Rimanere in silenzio non è un atto di compassione? Non è quindi una risposta?

Wiesenthal dopo la liberazione fa visita alla madre del soldato SS e, ancora una volta, decide di tacere, non dice all'anziana signora rimasta oramai sola, la verità sul figlio, divenuto un carnefice del Regime ...
